Common Problems Couples Are Facing in Their Marriage Today

Many couples come to us feeling stuck in patterns they don’t know how to change. Some of the most common challenges we see include:

  • Miscommunication that leads to constant misunderstandings
  • Emotional distance that makes you feel more like strangers than partners
  • No physical intimacy or a lack of a meaningful sex life
  • Dishonesty, secrets, or lies that have damaged trust
  • Recovering from the pain of infidelity or broken promises
  • Feeling like roommates instead of a couple
  • Ongoing disagreements about money, spending, or financial priorities
  • Struggles with parenting, work stress, or simply not having time for each other

These issues are real and more common than most people realize. You’re not alone. There is a way forward. With the right support, couples can reconnect, communicate more clearly, and feel good about their relationship again. We’re here to help you make that happen.

How Couples Therapy Can Help

When your relationship feels more like stress than support, it’s hard to imagine things getting better. Couples therapy gives you practical tools to shift out of survival mode and start working as a team again.

Improve Communication
Learn how to talk without interrupting, tuning out, or shutting down—and how to really listen so you can understand where your partner is coming from and start solving problems together.

Resolve Conflicts More Effectively
Stop having the same arguments over and over. We’ll help you handle disagreements without yelling, shutting down, or bringing up every mistake from the past.

Rebuild Trust
Start healing from past mistakes, broken promises, or dishonesty so you can feel secure in your relationship again.

Restore Physical and Emotional Intimacy
Address the lack of affection, connection, or sex in your relationship and find your way back to feeling close again.

Handle Stress Together
Instead of letting stress cause tension between you, learn how to support each other through busy schedules, parenting, and life’s demands.

Clarify Expectations
Avoid daily friction by getting on the same page about responsibilities, boundaries, and what you both need to feel supported.

Break Unhealthy Patterns
Replace habits like avoiding hard conversations, blaming, or keeping score with new ways of talking things through, owning your part, and working as a team.

You don’t have to keep living in constant tension. Couples therapy can help you rebuild your connection and create the kind of relationship that feels safe, supportive, and worth fighting for.

Client Testimonials and Success Stories

Brian and Stacy from Raleigh Hills:

This couple reached out to our practice seeking help with communication. They reported seeing more conflict in their relationship than they would want and it has increased over the last 3-4 months. Brian felt like he could “never get things right” and talked about “walking on eggshells” when around Stacy. Stacy reported becoming more and more upset with Brain spending time with friends and tinkering in their shop, which she saw as avoiding her and not prioritizing their relationship.

This couple worked with their therapist for about 12 sessions over the course of 4 months and here is what they had to say at the end of counseling:

Brian stated: “I just thought that avoiding conflict by staying out of Stacy’s way was the best thing to do, I had no idea she felt like I didn’t care about her.” “Our therapist helped me to see that my avoidance of conflict has been a long-standing strategy I learned as a kid to avoid seeing my parents argue and fight.” “Learning how to lean in rather than avoiding Stacy has been a challenge but has made a world of difference.”

Stacy noted: “I just thought that Brian was checking out and didn’t care about connecting with me anymore.” “Once I learned about his old behavior of avoiding conflict as a child it all made sense.” “Knowing that his actions weren’t a reflection of me helped me approach him differently and brought us closer than we’ve been in years.”

Braden from Raleigh Hills:

Braden came to therapy looking to work on breaking old relationship patterns. Recently Braden decided that he could no longer stay in a conflict-filled relationship with his girlfriend of 3 years. Braden wanted to learn reasons for his struggle to face tough decisions head-on and stop distracting himself with alcohol and work.

Much of Braden’s therapy focused on how he learned to deal with life’s stressors by distracting himself from difficult feelings. Braden learned that his mother’s ever-changing emotional state left him self-protecting by distracting himself with video games and focusing on his friends. This insight led to Braden learning how to set himself free from this old pattern. During therapy Braden learned how to deal with challenging emotions, shed responsibility that didn’t truly belong to him, and ultimately trust himself to make important decisions.

Lacey from Raleigh Hills:

Lacey called our office looking for support for her increasingly stressful life. Lacey had just started a new job, was deeply involved with the care of her aging mother, and was raising two teenagers. She reported feeling burned out and not doing a good job in any area of life.

The more Lacey talked about her past the more her therapist saw her role as the “family fixer.” Lacey had to step in and take care of her younger siblings after her parents’ divorce and this left no time for Lacey to care for herself. Her adopted role of fixer had led to career success but was leaving her feeling empty and exhausted from all the people in her life that needed/wanted her help. Lacey was helped to build the strength needed to step out of her old fixer role and began to set boundaries with her work, her family, and started to carve out much needed time for herself. At the end of her therapy Lacey had managed to build a much more balanced life where she felt less stretched in many directions and more centered and at peace.

Client Testimonials:

Gretchen:

“I started working with Brooke Stafford to build my confidence to start dating again after the end of a 7-year relationship.” “Brooke was so helpful and insightful.” “She pointed out things I had never noticed about myself, and I loved her calm demeanor and practical advice.” “I’d highly recommend Brooke for anyone looking for a solid therapist.”

Bridget and Marcus:

Bridget said, “Working with Greg was super helpful.” “I looked specifically for a male therapist to work with because I thought my husband would be more open to his advice.” “Greg was very direct and got to the heart of our issues so quickly.” Marcus added, “I appreciated the approach our therapist used and this whole experience has changed the way I think about therapy in general.”
